Pequot Yacht Club Commissioning Weekend and 100th Anniversary Celebration

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Senior Clubhouse at Pequot Yacht Club. To honor this milestone, we designed a Commissioning Weekend that not only celebrated the traditional opening of our season, but also highlighted the history and significance of our beloved Clubhouse.

The weather cooperated beautifully, and nearly all of our skippers with boats in the harbor dressed ship, creating a visually stunning backdrop for the festivities. Adding to the spectacle was the schooner Brilliant, berthed at our gas dock throughout the weekend. Seeing her fully dressed was truly magnificent.

On Friday evening, we celebrated the Golden Age of Sailing and the 100th Anniversary of the Clubhouse with The Golden Gala. The event featured 160 elegantly dressed members and guests, as well as a special 100th birthday cake. Guests enjoyed an array of delicious food stations, with the king crab legs served from ice sculpture chests proving to be a particular favorite. We then danced the night away to the music of What Up Funk, a talented band whose repertoire ranged from down-and-dirty funk to rap and classic 80s and 90s pop. They were a tremendous hit.

Saturday afternoon brought a fascinating presentation on Brilliant by her captain, Sarah Armour, who also led tours of the vessel for our membership. Brilliant has a rich history, having once been owned and sailed by early Pequot member and Sailing Hall of Fame inductee Briggs Cunningham.

On Sunday, we held the formal opening ceremony, attended by a large contingent of members, Commodores and representatives from neighboring clubs, distinguished guests from local government, and many of our Past Commodores. New members were introduced, and Leah Bryzski delivered an outstanding performance of our national anthem with an exceptional voice that captivated everyone in attendance.

Commodore Murphy gave an excellent and entertaining speech that thoughtfully highlighted the importance of this 100th anniversary for our Clubhouse and our Club. Following the ceremony, approximately 120 members and guests enjoyed a delicious luncheon together.

The weekend was a wonderful celebration of Pequot Yacht Club and a fitting tribute to the 100th Anniversary of our Clubhouse. With such a memorable beginning to the season, we look forward to a spectacular year of sailing, camaraderie, and revelry.
