A Little Background

Frostbiting, or winter dinghy racing, started at Pequot in 1932 but was discontinued with the advent of World War II. It formally began again in 1966 when a group of members decided to reinvent the program. Interestingly, its success prompted the Board of Governors to open the clubhouse on weekends. "The turnout on the weekends of both sailing competitors and members and their friends to watch this winter madness led to the opening of the galley for meals at noon hour as well." In 1966, recognizing the limitations of the harbor, the small 9-foot Dyer Dhow became the dinghy of choice.

Frostbite Overview:

We sail in Southport Harbor every Sunday, beginning in November through March in 9’ Dyers. There are two divisions – beginners, who sail from 11:30am to 1pm and experienced racers from 1:30 to 3:30pm. No boat, no problem! The Club offers the option of chartering a club owned boat for the season. There are a variety of events organized by the Frostbite Committee each year: rules clinics, socializing after racing, a party to watch the Super Bowl and chances for inter-club regattas. Sailors can register for the full season, or choose only the “Fall” or “Spring” to fit your schedule.
